About Chancer Reese

Hey, I’m Chancer Reese.  I’ve been involved in metalworking in various forms for the past 3 years.

Like most passions, it began as a simple hobby project. I wanted to make something “craft-y” for friends and family for Christmas.

This is because I can’t sew, knit or croquet.  I have no drawing or painting skills.  And my previous attempts at baking breads to give as gifts resulted in a lot of internal disturbances and funny looks (did you know too much baking soda can cause gas)?

Hmm… Well anyway that year, I thought I would try my hand at making metal Christmas stars from scrap nails.

So after hours of watching YouTube, I asked a friend who is a professional artisan jeweler to show me how to “silver solder”.

The rest is history?  Not yet but I do beat on my craft every week, working to build my skillset and expand my worldview through the really cool things that can be made from vintage-style cut nails, scrap steel and copper.

On this website, I share some of adventures in metalworking. To see more of my nail sculptures and wall art, click here.

Artist Statement

Ms. Chancer Reese is a metal artist from Asheville, North Carolina, who lives with a serial killer tomcat. She works with materials such as vintage-style cut nails, RG-45 steel rods and scrap copper to create functional pieces of metal wall art and desktop sculptures.

What started as a hobby making Christmas ornaments, has quickly became a passionate pursuit.  Chancer’s work is inspired by mid century modern wall art from such as artists Curtis Jeré, and work by Scottish copper sculptor Susan White Oakes, along with many North Carolina metal artists she has studied online.

Chancer is mostly self taught. She uses a high-power propane torch to either silver solder or bronze braze metal to create her artwork. With countless hours of research and painful trial and error, Chancer strives to become better with every piece she makes and eventually hopes to become a master metalsmith. Her work is currently on display at Asheville’s Mountain Made Gallery.
